Happy 60th Anniversary to Us!
On Saturday, May 4th from 1:00 to 3:00 we’ll be celebrating our 60th Anniversary!
Looking through the archives, I saw how while some things are radically different over 60 years, some are the same. Board members were noted as, for example, “Mrs. John Smith.” There were questions on the parent and teacher applications such as “Do you have access to a car?”
According to the Certificate of Incorporation, the purpose of Rocky Hill Cooperative Nursery School is “to provide a controlled environment for pre-school age children: to supplement their home training and to help them develop socially, emotionally, physically and mentally.”
What hasn’t changed is the parents are still involved in the running of the school and participating in the classroom (although they are no longer required to come in on weekends and scrub the room from top to bottom!) Teachers have always had a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in education.
While the parent board no longer has items on the agenda such as “a bigger bucket for the mop is needed,” or whether or not to have a turtle in the classroom, we still have a parent board and there continues to be monthly meetings. We no longer have a “social committee for “teas,” but parents do get together to socialize.
I am, and will continue to be amazed by people’s dedication to this school. As the FOURTH director in SIXTY YEARS, I have predecessors that were here over 20 years, and one for 32!
I’ve had other preschool directors and teachers how I can STAND to have parents in the room. I love it, and I can’t imagine teaching any other way. Family is a child’s first teacher, it only makes sense that we work together to help transition “our” children from home to Elementary School.
Happy 60th to us. Here’s to many more years of smiles, giggles, and cooperation!
