We’re working with the Watershed Institute!

I recently completed training for the River Friendly Academy at the Watershed Institute! What an amazing experience!

My first introduction to the Watershed Institute was in 1999 when I went on a field trip as a parent with Rocky Hill Co-op with my youngest son. I saw a flyer that said they needed volunteers for “critter care.” My then 11 year old son was interested, and for the next seven years or so, we drove weekly to the Stony Brook Millstone Watershed Association Buttinger Nature Center (as it was then called) to feed the critters.

2024 approximately 63 years old!

It’s a truly magical place!

It has changed so much over the years! Recently, I was being interviewed about my experience taking care of the red-eared slider, and Rocky Hill Co-op’s role in raising money to fund a new habitat for her. Our students earned money by doing simple jobs at home, the parents and the Board contributed as well. This was over 10 years ago, before the new center existed.

During the interview, I was asked if I knew about Stream Watch Schools, and was given a flyer. I’m in the process of completing the online part of the teacher education requirements, when an email came in about River Friendly Schools.

Once again, the Watershed’s magic hit me. I was SO excited and SO energized by the experience! Since we often visit the local stream as well as the Millstone River, these are amazing opportunities to expand the children’s and families’ opportunities to learn about the importance of water!

This year we will be working towards our certification as a River Friendly School. After my completion of another all day teacher training in August, we will also be working on our Stream Watch Certification as well! I’m very excited to incorporate Project Wet into our curriculum!
